Muscatatuck Wildlife Society

The Muscatatuck Wildlife Society is an all volunteer, non-profit 501(C)3 Friends organization created in 1989 for the purpose of supporting programs and activities at the Muscatatuck National Wildlife Refuge.

The mission is "to improve the natural and cultural resources at Muscatatuck NWR: also to connect people of all ages to nature and history by providing education, outreach, and wildlife-dependent recreational opportunities".

  • In 1997 MWS launched a Foundation that funded the Conservation Learning Center, an addition that doubled the size of the Visitor Center.
  • MWS created and manages the Nature Bookstore at the Visitor Center. Proceeds are used for refuge projects.
  • MWS is the major financial supporter of the Indiana Junior Duck Stamp Art Contests
  • MWS maintains the historic Myers Cabin and Barn (which the refuge cannot afford to do).
  • MWS is the primary sponsor of the refuge events and has in the past funded many things the refuge could not do - fishing piers, a bird viewing addition to the Visitors Center, observation decks, Refuge cemetary stone repair, copperbellied water snake research, a children's Nature Discovery Area, courtyard benches, pollinator plantings, and maintenance items
